The real shift in the underwear adidasy gazelle market is making the wearer looking good in their own eyes, not the eyes of someone else says Mazie Fisher, who founded the lingerie brand Beija.London with her sister Abbie Miranda. The brand s aesthetic is pared-back, cool and inclusive. Last year the Beija.London unveiled a campaign featuring 27 women in 27 different sizes, to illustrate just how inclusive lingerie can be. It was important to us to create a lingerie brand where women feel welcome, celebrated, and can feel excited. Something for them, disregarding the male gaze or what is perceived as typically commercially attractive. We want to contribute in making lingerie a healthy shopping environment for future generations, explains Fisher.
As nearly-nude models sell the product, of course lingerie brands reflect the zeitgeist , agrees the brand s co-founder Miranda. What s good nowadays is the increasing variety of identities that women can see reflected back to them and the ability to find a lingerie brand that matches their own social attitudes; some women still love a push-up adidasy ozweego bra, and that is completely acceptable and not to be judged. Sex still sells, but it needs to be presented as something empowering for the wearer, not for the gratification of the gaze, it seems. Or as Serena Rees puts it: It is about understanding that the only person who can validate you is you, that s what adidas gazelle s changed; sexiness now is about being confident and comfortable being yourself .
Originally designed for parachuters and aviators, the jumpsuit became a clear choice for wartime chores. It took a while, though. Women began working in factories from the onset of the war but it wasn t until 1915 they were allowed to wear jumpsuits, comments Maude Bass-Krueger, co-curator of French Fashion, Women, and the First World War, an exhibition at New York s Bard Graduate Center Gallery. Not all of them were happy about this. Women wore them because they were doing dangerous work but many of them would have rather been wearing dresses and feeling more feminine, says Bass-Krueger. At least they didn t adidas nmd have to wear them outside work: At the same time, a mandate for dressing rooms was created. So these women arrived to work in their dresses, changed into jumpsuits, and changed back out of them at the end of the day.
I wore it every day. It s a uniform that you can work and transition to social hours. It s utilitarian very much so but today s jumpsuit has also acquired an elegance that definitely was not part of the garment in the First World War. As a woman, I feel pulled in so many directions. Many women are paring down their wardrobes, and the jumpsuit fits in that. Last October, at the Louvre, a 23-year-old model called Krow Kian opened the Louis Vuitton spring/summer show, wearing a sleek grey suit with oversized jacket. Six months later, after many high-profile campaigns and covers, Krow was back on the Vuitton catwalk, to close the entire women s autumn/winter season. The news, apart from those razor-sharp cheekbones and that clear-eyed gaze? Krow is a transgender man the first ever on a womenswear catwalk.
It s only in the past ten years that trans models have been making headlines in the fashion industry. In 2010, Lea T became the first out trans woman to appear in a high-fashion campaign when she modelled for Givenchy. In 2015, Andreja Peji became the first trans model to be profiled in Vogue. Since then, names such as Maxim Magnus, Hari Nef and the luminous superstar adidas Hunter Schafer have appeared in campaigns for some of the world s most famous brands.Meanwhile, trans male models have remained rare until now. Krow s high-profile presence in the past two Paris fashion weeks marks a significant cultural shift that speaks volumes for all genders and for Krow himself. After years wrestling with his identity, everything finally became clear. Krow remembers the moment he stepped on to the Vuitton catwalk, his first since transitioning to male: It was an amazing feeling. The energy and the power you feel from the crowd& is incredible. |
